St Austell is named after the 6th century Cornish saint, St Austol and is one of the biggest towns in the county of Cornwall. The town was a noted centre of Methodism in 1939.

In the 18^th Century, Tin mining was huge in St Austell. Clay mining soon took over as the main industry in the area, and this eventually contributed enormously to the growth of the town. The clay industry really only blew up in the mid 19th to early 20th century, when metal prices well, mines were forced to close down or convert to clay mining.
